Update: COVID-19 changes

Things are changing quickly these days, and we are constantly adjusting to make sure we take care of the cats and people of House of Dreams in a safe and compassionate manner.

  • Starting April 5, we're suspending adoptions, especially because our veterinary partner only will be handling emergencies and can't conduct our normal pre-adoption examinations.
  • We won’t be accepting incoming cats unless it’s an emergency. We’ll maintain a waiting list for intake requests.
  • We’re most concerned about the health and welfare of our volunteers and our cats. We strongly advise volunteers to stay home if they feel sick or are in a high-risk category. We’re using our Slack workspace in addition to our email list to communicate open shifts and requests for coverage.
  • We’re emphasizing social distancing for volunteers who are able to come to the shelter to clean, socialize, feed, and medicate. And we’re adjusting schedules to minimize the number of people in the shelter daily.
  • We’ve instituted new protocols for cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched areas with a veterinary-grade disinfectant.
  • And we’re suspending orientation tours and training for new volunteers as long as the stay home order is in place, We’ll resume them as soon as we are able.

We’re proud of our volunteers at House of Dreams. Each and every one is lovingly dedicated to the care of our special needs cats. The cats are grateful and appreciative, and together, we look forward to better times ahead.

Urgent: Aroo Needs a Home!

  • Posted on: 16 June 2020

Here's a special plea for a very special and distinguished feline.

Aroo is seven years old, and needs a new home and a good friend.

He's in a foster home now where he's thriving. But circumstances dictate that he leave that home by June 24. And he hates shelter life.

Really hates it.

So if you're a cat-experienced human, maybe consider helping a cat who really needs your help.

Read more about Aroo here, and download this special flier about Aroo (PDF file).

Then hodadoptions [at] gmail.com (subject: Aroo) (email us) to tell us that you'd like to help this deserving cat out!

Happy 2020 Landings in Forever Homes!

We all can use some good news this year, and for a whole lot of House of Dreams cats, 2020 is the year they went to their forever homes!

Before we suspended adoptions in early April to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, fifteen cats found their humans, and we were overjoyed to send them off.

  • The beautiful Belle, elegant long-haired Kovu, and playful and curious Seamus had come in together--and luckily were adopted by the same household. It's always rewarding to see bonded cats maintain their family status, and we're grateful to their new human family for keeping them together.
  • Affectionate Cree and playful Luke are at home with House of Dreams volunteer Christina.
  • Our charming cerebellar hypoplasia cat Sweetpea is filling her new human's home with love.
  • Energetic Tahli found his forever home with help from our friends at Cat Adoption Team.
  • Longtime FeLV+ resident Coco waited patiently for her perfect home with our former volunteer coordinator.
  • Friendly Riley made it official, graduating from foster cat to forever cat with our former President.
  • Captivating Saffron found patience paid off, too. She had been adopted and returned, but went to her forever home for good this year.
  • Longtime foster Boxcar was adopted by his foster momma.
  • Magnificent beasts Star and Io now are home with a longtime supporter of House of Dreams.
  • And both energetic Maisey and handsome Thor were at House of Dreams for a very short time before being adopted by their perfect humans.

Keep up with many of the cats who have come through House of Dreams at their Facebook alumni page, with photos and stories of their lives post-adoption.

We're thrilled so many wonderful cats now are thriving in homes; it's why we do what we do!

COVID-19 and House of Dreams

The safety and health of the cats and humans at House of Dreams are our top priorities, so we are taking measures to ensure both.

Following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and the State of Oregon, we're cancelling two planned events: our volunteer appreciation event in April and the Vegan Bake Sale and Book Sale in May. We hope to reschedule both events later in the year.

A clean and sanitary shelter always has been important, and now we're instituting additional cleaning and disinfecting protocols to prevent any spread of the coronavirus.

We are considering how to prepare for an influx of requests to intake cats if there is a community need because of the virus.

And note that the World Health Organization states that humans cannot contract COVID-19 from their companion animals.

We urge everyone to plan for their own pets during this period. Make sure to have sufficient food, litter, and medications on hand to shelter in place if necessary. After all, a cat companion is the best companion for extended periods at home.
